To celebrate National Curry Week, Brick Lane based recipe website Mydish.co.uk released a one-off "Brick Lane curry book special" with all the profits going to Oxfam.
Based on Brick Lane, MyDish.co.uk is an online social networking recipe website set up to help Britain preserve its favourite recipes. MyDish encourages its members to upload their favorite and most treasured recipes, and to share the memories they evoke. To do this, MyDish users may upload their pictures and stories about the dish. What Do the Owners and Chefs from Brick Lane’s Curry Houses Eat at Home? The idea behind Brick Lane: The Recipe Secrets is simple: what are the favourite dishes of the people behind the UK’s top curry houses on Brick Lane in London's East End? Carol Savage, founder of MyDish and author of the Brick Lane: The Recipe Secrets, explains that her question for the owners and chefs from Brick Lane’s most popular haunts was simply: "What do you eat at home?" The Ultimate Curry CookbookBrick Lane: The Recipe Secrets includes traditional Bengali favourites ranging from Thatul Tanga Bujon to Almashriki Chicken. There are also some innovative recipes as well as signature dishes that can only be found on ‘The Lane’. Carol Savage explains that “What makes this book unique is that it isn’t just about great recipes – but about traditional family recipes that most of us have never heard of. Many of these dishes have been passed down over generations and this book is about sharing the secrets”. In perfect MyDish style, the recipes tell many personal stories, describing dishes unique to family weddings, curry recipes created to feed 10 children in one sitting, stories of the importance of sugar snap peas in Bangladesh, and how one curry master wants his English friends to enjoy something other than Korma. Book DetailsBrick Lane: The Recipe Secrets is available to purchase from MyDish. The book was launched for National Curry Week (23rd - 29th November 2008) and its profits will support some of Oxfam’s projects in Asia, so it's also a great idea for a Christmas gift. Runner beans are an important vegetable and when in season this is my favourite way to eat them. They remind me of my homeland as we use these throughout the year. Even when not in season, the mature seeds are captured and eaten again. Every time I see them, it reminds me of my childhood". Ingredients
