Driving from Memphis to Fort Smith, Ark. on the farmlands stretch of I-40 requires a few stops along the way, including one to Conway, Ark. to sample good hometown fare.

Dining options in Conway include everything from seafood, barbecue, Mexican, southern-style, as well as fine-dining and upscale establishments. Upscale restaurants like Mike's Place and Michelangelo's, both in downtown Conway, are definitely worth visiting on your trip there.

Simplicity and Hometown Cookin’

Many eateries have been staples to the Conway stomach for quite some time, pleasing everyone from college students to families.

One such spot that is definitely on the list is Stoby's Restaurant. Most recently known as a favorite place of American Idol star, Chris Allen, the restaurant is also well known around Arkansas and the South for its “famous” cheese dip. To go along with the cheese dip are an assortment of sandwiches, burgers and desserts.

Stoby’s also has an impressive breakfast menu, complete with homemade buttermilk pancakes, bacon and omelets and so much more. Be forewarned, however, that the diner literally has 15 or so tables, so be prepared to wait in line or arrive before the crowd.

Southern Eatin’

Hart’s Seafood holds the “heart” of those who love fried catfish, green tomato relish, coleslaw and hush puppies. For those who didn’t grow up in the South and don’t understand the importance of these four food-groups, it is something that simply must be experienced.

Hart’s isn’t known for its classy dining room or elegant menu. In fact, the restaurant is really a buffet joint catering to those who enjoy a good southern-fried meal, with plenty of seconds, salad and fresh fruit cobbler and ice cream -- all included.

Its wait-staff is always welcoming, warm and striking up conversation with those in the dining room. To pass up this mom and pop spot on your trip through Conway would be a big mistake, especially if fried catfish and southern friendliness isn’t something you’ve experienced before. It is most definitely worth the trip.

Charming Hometown Café

Coffee shops in any town tend to be the perfect spots to get some excellent drinks and an opportunity to relax, read, meet new people and listen to music. Something Brewing is one coffee shop that fits that description perfectly.

This delightful coffee shop on Front Street close to Hendrix College in downtown Conway is family owned and operated. It has gone through a series of changes and renovations over the years, perfecting the menu and coming up with some amazing, diverse drink and food offerings.

With a nice outdoor patio facing the front entrance of the coffee shop, locals and college students can enjoy the outdoors while sipping a chai tea or smoothie and savor a homemade Turkey and Swiss Sandwich or Cranberry Walnut Pancakes.

Seating is also available inside the coffee shop or ring-up an order at the counter and take a drink or a meal to go. It’s a charming place, sure to bring you back time and time again, if only for the luring atmosphere and kind folks.
