Choose from a variety of ethnic cuisine. From pizza and sushi to deli food and fish and chips...Tips on culinary delights both on board ship and in the islands

If you’re sailing on Carnival’s Freedom for a four day western Caribbean cruise from Miami to Key West and Cozumel, don’t miss these unique dining opportunities.

Miami dining

Remember the ship doesn’t depart until 4 p.m. so if you arrive early enough, hit Casa Juancho in Little Havana. (2436 South West 8th Street) You’ll dine on your choice of everything Cuban. From succulent pork to a fresh mixed seafood grill. And the international wine list is supposed to be one of the best in Miami. Don’t forget to try some of that strong cuban coffee before you leave. It will energize you for a late night on the ship. 10best.com gives Casa Juancho a 5 star rating.

When you arrive on board, you’ll want to make a dinner reservation for one night at the Sun King Restaurant. It costs a little extra($40 per person) but you’ll listen to live entertainment and watch the chef prepare a meal at your table. Although children are allowed at this supper club, Carnival recommends adults only. You can make your reservations mid ship on the Panorama deck.

On board dining

  • The Chic and Posh dining rooms. Seatings are 5:45,6:15,8:00 or 8:30. Formal night includes a Lobster dinner. You won’t know which night is formal until you arrive on the ship.
  • Buffet Restaurant open all day. You can choose between Asian, American grill or deli, salad bar, taste-of-the nation, 24 hour pizzeria, fish and chips, and an ice cream bar.

Remember the Meiji Sushi Bar is also complimentary and is open every night just before dinner. The Saki, however costs extra.

Key West dining

When in Key West, dine as the islanders do. The Travel Channel recommends two places with a Caribbean flare:

  • El Siboney 900 Catherine Street, Key West Try this Cuban favorite, Paella Valencia and black bean soup. Entrees run less than 15 dollars.
  • Mangoes 700 Duval Street, Key West This is not the place for vacationers on a budget. But you’ll come away very full. Try the Tempura style Mahi-Mahi wrap with cucumbers, sprouts and plum tomatoes. Or the paella with lobster, shrimp, chicken, and chorizo sausage. Entrees run between 10 and 30 dollars.

Cozumel dining

Once you arrive on Cozumel, Fodors recommends La Choza. An entree costs between $5 and $25. It is located at Calle Adolpho Rosado Salas 198, at Av 10. Mole Rojo is a favorite dish here. It’s made with cinnamon and chilies. Or order cochinita pibil(marinated pork baked in banana leaves) If you’re not full by now, try the chilled chocolate pie or if you’re adventurous, the avocado pie!

After Cozumel, you’ll have a chance to enjoy the ship’s cuisine during your day at sea. Save room for one more meal in Miami when you’re cruise ends on Friday morning .

Miami for breakfast

  • The Blue Door 1685 Collins Avenue in South Beach, Located in the Delano Hotal, This ultra Modern establishment serves down home food with a twist. Try the Belgian malted waffles or the salmon benedict for brunch.
